Obverse description Highly stylised Celtic effigy of a head facing right, derived from classical Hellenistic prototypes. The hair is rendered as a series of raised parallel striations sweeping back from the brow, suggestive of a crested helmet or elaborate coiffure. A prominent curvilinear ram's horn projects forward from the forehead, a distinctive torc-like curl ornaments the neck area, and a pellet-in-annulet motif marks the eye. The overall treatment is characteristic of the La Tène artistic tradition, with naturalistic forms dissolved into abstract geometric and curvilinear elements.

Additional information

The Treveri occupied the Moselle valley around what is now Trier, and their coinage derived ultimately from Macedonian gold staters circulated by Philip II's campaigns — each generation of imitation drifting further from the prototype until the original imagery became near-abstract. DT#128 sits toward the middle of that devolution sequence. The type was likely produced not for routine commerce but for elite redistribution: warrior payment, alliance gifts, mercenary hire. Finds cluster along the Moselle and its tributaries rather than in settlement centers.
