Obverse description Central field displays the papal coat of arms of the Medici family — a shield charged with the characteristic Medici palle (six roundels) — surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of St. Peter, the traditional symbols of pontifical authority. The heraldic composition is rendered in the robust, slightly archaic style typical of early sixteenth-century Roman hammered coinage. A beaded inner border frames the central device, with the circumferential Latin legend distributed around the periphery of the flan.
