Reverse description Within a beaded inner circle, a bold equal-armed cross pattée occupies the central field, its arms splayed toward the inner border in the Genoese tradition derived from the genovino d'oro type. The cross is crisply struck and dominates the flan. Surrounding the inner beaded circle, a circular Latin legend in uncial characters invokes the Holy Roman Emperor Conrad, affirming the imperial authority under which Genoese coinage was theoretically issued. The legend is punctuated by crosses and stops in the customary medieval Genoese manner. The coin's surface retains the slightly irregular plancher characteristic of hammered gold issues of this period.
