Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, a stylized frontal depiction of the castello (castle gate) of Genoa, rendered in the characteristic schematic manner of medieval Genoese coinage, showing a fortified gateway with towers and battlements set upon a stepped base. The design, though reduced in scale as befitting this quarter denomination, faithfully echoes the castle motif standard to Genoese gold coinage. The surrounding field bears a circular Latin legend in uncial characters, punctuated by crosses and stops, reading the doge's title and ordinal number. The overall fabric is irregular and slightly convex, as typical of hammered medieval gold.
