| Obverse description | Central field features a period artillery cannon with large spoked wheels rendered in relief, positioned horizontally across the coin. The denomination legend 'QUART DE FRANC' appears in three lines at the top of the field, flanked on either side by the dual dates '1821' and '2021' commemorating the bicentenary of Napoleon Bonaparte's death. Below the cannon, the inscription 'ESSAI TRIAL' is struck in the lower field. The circular legend 'Domaines Nationaux de Sainte-Hélène' runs along the inner border, with a beaded rim encircling the entire design. |

| Additional information |
Saint Helena issued its own coinage series beginning in 1984, distinct from the pound sterling circulating in the UK, though the two currencies remained at parity. The franc denomination here is a curiosity — it reflects the island's historical ties to the East India Company and early French monetary influence in the South Atlantic, not any modern French political connection. Ascension Island, administered jointly, has no resident civilian population to speak of, making circulation figures for any joint issue largely nominal.
