Obverse description Bare-headed bust of Napoleon I facing right, depicted in the neoclassical style with short cropped hair, occupying the central field. The circular legend NAPOLEON EMPEREUR runs around the periphery. The engraver's signature, TIOLIER, appears incuse below the truncation of the bust. The portrait is rendered with fine detail characteristic of Tiolier's work during the early Imperial period.

Reverse description Central field features the denomination QUART (quarter) inscribed within an open laurel and oak wreath, tied at the base with a ribbon. The abbreviated legend REP. FRA. (République Française) arcs across the upper periphery, flanking the wreath. The Republican calendar year AN 12 (or AN 13 or AN 14, depending on the issue) appears in the lower exergue, with the mint mark letter positioned to the right of the wreath. A toothed border frames the entire design.
