William of Gennep served as Archbishop of Cologne from 1349 until his death in 1362, a tenure defined largely by his role in the Rhenish monetary union of 1354, in which Cologne, Mainz, Trier, and the Palatinate agreed to coordinate gold coinage standards. This quarter florin belongs to that cooperative framework — a fractional denomination produced specifically to satisfy demand for smaller gold transactions that the full florin could not practically serve.
