Leopoldo II issued this fractional denomination in the early years of his reign, shortly after inheriting the Grand Duchy from his father Ferdinando III in 1824. The fiorino series was a deliberate nod to Florentine monetary tradition stretching back to the medieval florin, though by the 1820s the connection was largely nominal — the coins functioned as straightforward Habsburg-administered currency rather than any meaningful revival.
The quarter fiorino saw limited practical use given its small size, and surviving examples in decent condition are harder to locate than the mintage alone would suggest.
