Sword Beach was the easternmost of the five Allied landing zones on 6 June 1944, assigned to British and Free French forces of the 3rd Infantry Division. The 80th anniversary series from the Monnaie de Paris issues these quarter-euro pieces as legal tender collector coins — technically spendable at face value, though Nordic gold, the same copper-aluminum-zinc-tin alloy used across EU circulation coinage, gives them a weight and heft that makes pocket change an unlikely fate.
