Saint Anthony — born in Lisbon around 1195, though claimed for centuries by Padua, where he died in 1231 — became the subject of an ongoing Portuguese cultural reclamation during the early 2000s. Portugal's insistence on titling him "of Lisbon" rather than "of Padua" is a deliberate national statement, one that predates this coin by decades but found particular expression in commemorative issues of this period.
The INCM's fractional gold quarter-euro series was aimed squarely at the collector market; none of these pieces entered circulation in any meaningful sense.
