Reverse description The reverse displays a quartered royal shield of arms surmounted by a royal crown, with the dexter chief and sinister base quarters bearing the fleurs-de-lis of France, and the sinister chief and dexter base quarters bearing the cows of Béarn. The denomination mark IIII appears flanking the shield at either side, indicating the quarter-ecu value. A Latin legend surrounds the field reading GRATIA DEI SVM Q D SVM, a Biblical citation from 1 Corinthians 15:10 ('By the grace of God I am what I am'), with the date 1599 incorporated into the legend. A small star punctuates the legend.
