Obverse description Central device features an ornate floriated cross with fleur-de-lis terminals at each arm, the upward arm surmounted by a crown, executed in high relief in the hammered style characteristic of late French Renaissance coinage. The four quadrants of the cross are elaborately decorated with foliate and beaded ornament. The date appears within the circular Latin legend surrounding the cross. The peripheral legend reads HENRICVS IIII D G FRANC ET NAVA REX followed by the mint date, separated by pellets and arranged around the full circumference of the coin within a beaded inner border.

Reverse description Central device depicts the royal arms of France: a shield semé of fleurs-de-lis arranged three and three, surmounted by a large open royal crown adorned with fleurs-de-lis and arches. To either side of the shield the Roman numeral denomination II II (indicating the quarter écu value) is prominently displayed in the field. The surrounding circular Latin legend, reading SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM, is separated by a mint mark and the mint letter, all contained within a beaded inner border typical of hammered French royal coinage of the period.
