Additional information

Vincent I Gonzaga came to power in 1587 under a cloud — his first marriage to Margherita Farnese had been annulled after years of bitter dispute over consummation, a scandal litigated before papal authorities with humiliating specificity. By 1596, he was consolidating a court that would become one of the most extravagant in northern Italy, employing Rubens and later commissioning Monteverdi's first operas. Small fractional gold of this type circulated primarily as gift pieces and wage payments within the ducal household rather than through open commerce.
