Sigismund von Schrattenbach ruled Salzburg from 1753 until his death in December 1771, and 1770 places this strike in the final stretch of a reign that coincided almost exactly with the childhood of his most famous subject — Leopold Mozart petitioned Schrattenbach repeatedly for patronage, and the Archbishop funded several of the family's early Italian journeys. The Salzburg mint was producing fractional gold throughout this period primarily for gift-giving and ceremonial distribution rather than everyday commerce; pieces of this weight rarely survived rough handling.
