| Reverse description | Saint Rupert, patron saint of Salzburg, depicted enthroned facing forward in full pontifical vestments including mitre and cope, holding a crozier in his left hand and a salt barrel in his right. A fraction denomination indicator '1/4' appears within an oval cartouche at the base of the design. The date 1753 is incorporated into the surrounding circular Latin legend, which runs continuously around the periphery of the coin. |

Sigismund von Schrattenbach held the archbishopric of Salzburg from 1753 until his death in 1771, and this piece was struck in the first year of his tenure. Salzburg's archbishops retained the right to mint gold coinage well into the eighteenth century as prince-bishops of the Holy Roman Empire — a privilege increasingly anomalous as territorial consolidation eroded similar rights elsewhere. The "type 1" designation distinguishes this early issue from later die modifications made during his long reign.
