Ernest Louis, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, was an enthusiastic builder and patron whose court expenditures chronically outpaced his revenues — the fractional ducat issues of his reign were partly a practical response to a persistent shortage of small-denomination gold for courtly transactions.
