Charles VI ruled as Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia simultaneously, and Prague Mint fractions like this quarter ducat served the court economy and gift-giving functions more than everyday commerce — gold of this weight was far too valuable for ordinary market transactions. The denomination persisted through the 1720s and into the 1730s partly because Charles had no male heir, and the court's preoccupation with securing the Pragmatic Sanction kept the imperial administration — and its mints — running at full ceremonial capacity almost until his death in 1740.
