| Obverse description | Left-facing effigy of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), rendered in the classical portrait style originally sculpted by John Flanagan and updated by William Cousins. The truncated bust fills the lower central field, with the national legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcing across the upper periphery and LIBERTY positioned to the left of the portrait. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears to the right of the bust, with the mint mark below, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the lower rim. The engravers' initials JF and WC appear at the base of the truncation. |
