The Voyageurs National Park quarter is part of the America the Beautiful series launched in 2010, which committed the Mint to producing five-ounce silver bullion strikes for each of the 56 parks and sites scheduled across the program's eleven-year run. Voyageurs, established as a national park in 1975 after decades of lobbying by Minnesota conservationists against persistent timber and mining interests, was assigned the 2018 Minnesota slot.
These five-ounce issues carry nominal face value of 25 cents — a legal fiction that creates an oddity in U.S. coinage law, as the silver content alone exceeds that denomination by several hundred times over.
