| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust effigy of George Washington, the first President of the United States, rendered in high relief after the original design by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, while QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the lower rim. The word LIBERTY appears in the left field, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed in four lines to the right of the portrait. The mint mark appears below the motto, just above the ribbon tying Washington's queue. |
