Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of George Washington, based on the classic portrait by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins, occupies the central field. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper rim, while LIBERTY appears to the lower left and QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the bottom rim. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed in three lines to the right of Washington's portrait. A small mint mark is situated below the motto, to the right of the portrait's truncation.
