Obverse description The obverse features the left-facing portrait bust of George Washington, the first President of the United States (1789–1797), as originally designed by John Flanagan and later modified by William Cousins. The legend LIBERTY appears above the effigy, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed to the left of the portrait. The face value QUARTER DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower rim, flanked by the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the mint mark and engravers' initials JF and WC positioned near the truncation.
