Obverse description Left-facing effigy of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), rendered in high relief after John Flanagan's classic design as modified by William Cousins. The truncation of the bust is positioned at the lower field, with the mint mark appearing below. The surrounding legend reads LIBERTY above, IN GOD WE TRUST to the left, and QUARTER DOLLAR below, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs across the upper periphery. The designer initials JF and WC appear near the bust truncation.
