| 背面描述 | The reverse depicts a close view of Camel Rock, a distinctive sandstone formation characteristic of Shawnee National Forest in Illinois, framed by natural vegetation in the foreground. A red-tailed hawk soars in the open sky above the rock formation, lending a sense of scale and wildlife to the composition. The legend SHAWNEE arcs along the upper periphery, with ILLINOIS positioned below, and the date 2016 appearing in the lower field. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed along the lower rim, and the engravers' initials JK and JL appear discreetly within the design. |

The Shawnee National Forest quarter was part of the America the Beautiful series, authorized under the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008 — legislation that committed the Mint to a 56-coin program running through 2021, covering all fifty states, five territories, and the District of Columbia. Illinois drew Shawnee for its 2016 slot, the forest being one of the few areas in the Midwest with genuine topographic relief, a result of glaciers bypassing the region entirely during the last ice age.
The .900 silver proof version was struck exclusively at San Francisco.
