| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse depicts a dramatic landscape of the Garden of the Gods rock formation within Shawnee National Forest, Illinois, featuring prominently stratified sandstone pillars rising from a forested terrain in the central field. A soaring raptor, likely a vulture or eagle, is shown in flight above the rock formations, conveying the natural grandeur of the site. The legend SHAWNEE arcs along the upper periphery, with ILLINOIS inscribed along the lower left and E PLURIBUS UNUM along the lower right rim. The date 2016 appears in the exergue at the bottom center. The design was executed by Justin Kunz and engraved by Jim Licaretz. |

The Shawnee National Forest quarter was issued under the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, authorized by Congress in 2008 to run through 2021 — one of the longest-running commemorative coin series in U.S. history, covering 56 sites across all 50 states, Washington D.C., and the five territories. Shawnee was Illinois' sole entry in the program. The forest itself sits atop the southernmost tip of the state, geologically distinct from the glaciated plains above it, and was designated a national forest in 1939.
