Pictured Rocks became the first designated National Lakeshore in the United States when Congress passed the enabling legislation in 1966, though full federal acquisition of private land within the boundary dragged on for decades afterward. Michigan's Upper Peninsula had been lobbied for the designation since the early 1960s largely through the efforts of Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall, who pushed aggressively to expand the National Park System before the Johnson administration ended.
This is the 45th release in the America the Beautiful Quarters program, which Congress authorized in 2008 to run through 2021.
