Obverse description Left-facing bust effigy of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), rendered in high relief after the original 1932 design by John Flanagan as modified by William Cousins. The legend LIBERTY arcs above the portrait, IN GOD WE TRUST appears to the left of the bust, and QUARTER DOLLAR is inscribed below. The mint mark appears to the right of the ribbon, with the designer's initials JF and WC incused at the base of the truncation.
