Ohio joined the 50 State Quarters program in 2002 as the seventeenth state represented, reflecting its order of ratification in 1803. The silver proof version was struck at San Francisco, where the mint has produced proof coinage almost continuously since 1968. These were sold directly to collectors and never entered general circulation — the .900 silver composition was reserved exclusively for the collector sets, while the circulating strikes used copper-nickel clad.
Ohio's selection as the seventeenth state in the program's sequence was straightforward, but the design approval process was not — the state submitted five candidate designs to the Treasury, with the final selection made after public polling.
