| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a scene from the first powered airplane flight of December 17, 1903, based on the iconic photograph taken by John T. Daniels at Kitty Hawk, showing the Wright Flyer airborne above the ground with Orville Wright at the controls and Wilbur Wright standing nearby. The state name NORTH CAROLINA arcs across the top of the design, with the year of the state's admission to the Union, 1789, inscribed below. The inscription FIRST FLIGHT appears in the lower portion of the field, flanked by the reverse designer's initials JM and the issue year 2001. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed along the lower rim. |
