Reverse description The reverse depicts a dynamic scene adapted from Emanuel Leutze's celebrated painting 'Washington Crossing the Delaware,' showing General Washington and his troops crossing the icy Delaware River in a crowded boat, with oarsmen, soldiers bearing muskets and a flag, and broken ice floes in the foreground and background. The legend NEW JERSEY arcs across the upper periphery, with the date 1787 — the year of New Jersey's ratification of the Constitution — immediately below. The inscription CROSSROADS OF THE REVOLUTION is displayed in two lines across the central lower field, with the denomination date 1999 and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM along the lower rim. The design was executed by Alfred Maletsky as part of the 50 State Quarters program.
