The American Samoa quarter was the first of the 2020 America the Beautiful series releases, part of a program Congress authorized in 2008 to run through 2021 covering 56 federal sites across all states, territories, and the District of Columbia. The National Park of American Samoa — established in 1988 — remains one of the least-visited units in the entire National Park System, a geographic reality that made its selection quietly political: territorial representation in the program was a deliberate inclusion, not an afterthought.
2020 Philadelphia and Denver business strikes were produced alongside West Point-struck silver specimens, the latter under a separate authorizing provision that kept 90% silver collector versions running parallel to clad circulation issues throughout the program's life.
