Reverse description The reverse presents a naturalistic scene depicting a Samoan fruit bat (Pteropus samoensis) mother hanging from a tree branch with her pup clinging beneath her, rendered in fine relief against a detailed foliage background. The design, executed by Phebe Hemphill from artwork by Richard Masters, was conceived to raise awareness of the species' threatened status due to habitat loss and commercial hunting. The National Park of American Samoa, the sole United States national park to host this species, is honored by the inscription 'NATIONAL PARK OF AMERICAN SAMOA' arcing along the upper field. The motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' appears in the lower field alongside the date '2020' and the designer initials 'RaM PH' in the exergue area.
