Obverse description The obverse presents a left-facing draped bust of George Washington, first President of the United States, rendered in the classic portrait style originally modeled by John Flanagan after a sculpture by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim above the portrait, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed in two lines in the left field. The San Francisco Mint mark S appears below the motto, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower rim, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA flanking it on either side.
