Obverse description Left-facing draped bust effigy of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), rendered after the original design by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. The legend LIBERTY arcs above the portrait, IN GOD WE TRUST appears to the left of the effigy, and QUARTER DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower rim. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the upper field. The portrait is executed in high relief befitting the enlarged five-ounce bullion format.
