Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of George Washington, based on John Flanagan's design adapted from the 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, while QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the lower periphery. The inscription LIBERTY appears to the left of the portrait, and IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed in three lines to the right of the bust. The San Francisco Mint mark S appears below IN GOD WE TRUST, and the designer's initials JF appear incuse on the truncation of the neck.

Reverse description A American bison stands facing left in the central field, depicted in high relief with naturalistic detail atop a grassy mound, emblematic of the Great Plains. To the lower left, a cluster of sunflowers — the Kansas state flower — is rendered in fine detail. The state name KANSAS arcs along the upper periphery, with the year of statehood 1861 inscribed below it. The date 2005 and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appear in the lower portion of the field, with the engraver's initials NEN visible near the base of the design.
