| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of George Washington, based on John Flanagan's design adapted from the 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, while QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the lower periphery. The inscription LIBERTY appears to the left of the portrait, and IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed in three lines to the right of the bust. The San Francisco Mint mark S appears below IN GOD WE TRUST, and the designer's initials JF appear incuse on the truncation of the neck. |
