| Obverse description | Left-facing bust of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), rendered in the classic portrait style originally designed by John Flanagan and updated by William Cousins. The legend LIBERTY appears above left, and the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed to the right of the portrait. The denomination QUARTER DOLLAR arcs along the lower rim, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the upper rim. The mint mark and designers' initials JF and WC appear in the lower field near the truncation of the bust. |
