| Beschrijving keerzijde | The central device depicts a forward-facing Indianapolis-style open-wheel racing car superimposed over a textured outline map of the state of Indiana, evoking the state's renowned motorsport heritage at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Nineteen stars arranged in an arc encircle the left and lower portions of the central design, referencing Indiana's status as the 19th state admitted to the Union. The legend INDIANA and the statehood year 1816 appear along the upper periphery, while the state motto CROSSROADS OF AMERICA is inscribed across the mid-field. The date 2002 and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM are inscribed along the lower rim, with the designer's initials DW visible in the lower right field of the map. |

Indiana's statehood quarter was released in August 2002, the fourth of five state quarters issued that year. The design was chosen through a public submission process administered by the Indiana State Quarter Design Advisory Commission, which ultimately forwarded finalists to Governor Frank O'Bannon for final selection. Indiana was the nineteenth state admitted to the Union, in 1816.
