The Grand Canyon quarter was the second of five releases in 2010 under the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, which Congress authorized in 2008 as a successor to the fifty state quarters series. The Park Service had to approve each design, and early submissions for the Grand Canyon were rejected before the final composition was accepted — an unusual degree of external oversight for a circulating U.S. coin.
Philadelphia and Denver both struck business strikes; San Francisco produced collector-only pieces in both clad and 90% silver. The silver proof version has drawn more secondary-market attention than the circulation issue, which was minted in the hundreds of millions.
