The monument is rendered in fine detail against an open field, evoking the historic landscape of the battlefield. The inscription GETTYSBURG arcs across the upper field, with PENNSYLVANIA below it, and the date 2011 appears in the lower portion of the design. The national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed along the lower rim. The composition was designed by Joel Iskowitz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. |

The Gettysburg quarter was issued as part of the America the Beautiful series, which expanded the earlier 50 State Quarters program to cover national parks and federal sites. Gettysburg National Military Park itself preserves roughly 6,000 acres of the battlefield where, over three days in July 1863, Union and Confederate forces suffered a combined estimated 50,000 casualties — the bloodiest engagement of the Civil War.
The silver proof version was struck at San Francisco exclusively for collector sets, using the .900 fine alloy that had been standard for circulating quarters prior to 1965.
