The George Rogers Clark National Historical Park quarter was the second of five America the Beautiful issues for 2017, part of the broader program launched in 2010 to work through all fifty states, federal territories, and the District of Columbia. Clark himself is one of the more overlooked figures of the Revolutionary War period — his 1779 winter campaign across flooded Illinois territory, capturing the British-held Fort Sackville at Vincennes, effectively secured American claims to the Northwest Territory during peace negotiations in 1783. Without that campaign, the Ohio Valley might have remained British.
