Fort McHenry entered the America the Beautiful bullion series as the Maryland entry for 2013, selected because of its role in the 1814 bombardment that directly inspired Francis Scott Key to write what became the national anthem. The five-ounce format was introduced in 2010 specifically to create a bullion product with collector crossover appeal, minted in both bullion and burnished finishes with the latter struck at West Point.
The KM#559 designation covers the bullion strike, distinguished from the numismatic version by the absence of a mint mark.
