The Everglades quarter was issued under the America the Beautiful Bullion program, which Congress authorized in 2010 as the five-ounce silver companion to the circulating America the Beautiful quarters series. Everglades National Park was established in 1947 largely through the efforts of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, whose book The Everglades: River of Grass, published that same year, reframed public understanding of the ecosystem as a slow-moving river rather than a swamp — a distinction that proved critical to its political survival.

These bullion strikes were produced at Philadelphia without a mint mark. The collector-finish "specimen" versions from San Francisco carry an "S" and command a premium over the standard issues.
