| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of George Washington, based on the classic portrait by John Flanagan and adapted by William Cousins, occupies the central field. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper rim, while LIBERTY appears to the left of the effigy and QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the lower rim. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed in two lines to the right of Washington's portrait, and the San Francisco Mint mark S appears below that motto. The coin exhibits the deeply mirrored fields and frosted relief characteristic of proof coinage. |
