El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system, administered by the U.S. Forest Service rather than the National Park Service — a distinction that made its inclusion in the America the Beautiful Quarters program mildly contentious, since earlier quarters in the series had depicted NPS sites exclusively. Congress ultimately expanded the program's eligibility criteria to include all lands managed by federal agencies.
The .900 silver proof strikes were produced at San Francisco. Collector demand for this particular release was notably subdued compared to earlier issues in the series.
