| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a naturalistic scene celebrating the biodiversity of El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico. A Puerto Rican parrot (Amazona vittata), an endangered endemic species, perches prominently on a tree branch amid lush tropical foliage in the upper right field. In the lower left foreground, a coqui frog (Eleutherodactylus coqui), the iconic symbol of Puerto Rico, rests on a rock amid tropical vegetation. The legend EL YUNQUE arcs along the upper periphery, with PUERTO RICO to the left and E PLURIBUS UNUM to the right within the inner circle. The date 2012 appears in the lower exergue, and the engravers' initials GW and MG are present in the field. |

| Additional information |
El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system, administered by the U.S. Forest Service rather than the National Park Service — a distinction that made its inclusion in the America the Beautiful Quarters program mildly contentious, since earlier quarters in the series had depicted NPS sites exclusively. Congress ultimately expanded the program's eligibility criteria to include all lands managed by federal agencies.
The .900 silver proof strikes were produced at San Francisco. Collector demand for this particular release was notably subdued compared to earlier issues in the series.
