The Effigy Mounds National Monument in northeastern Iowa preserves over 200 prehistoric burial and ceremonial mounds, many built by Indigenous peoples between roughly 350 and 1400 AD. Iowa was the forty-sixth state admitted to the Union and the last to receive its America the Beautiful five-ounce silver issue — 2017 marked the final scheduled year of the program's first full rotation through all fifty states, five territories, and the District of Columbia.
The bullion version carries no mint mark; collector specimens from West Point are marked 'W' and struck to proof or burnished finish.
