Obverse description The obverse presents a left-facing portrait effigy of George Washington, first President of the United States (1789–1797), based on the classic design originally sculpted by John Flanagan. The legend LIBERTY arcs above the bust, while IN GOD WE TRUST appears to the left of the portrait in the field. The date appears below the bust, and the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR frame the lower periphery of the design. The mintmark S, denoting the San Francisco Mint, is positioned below the ribbon in Washington's hair.
