Obverse description Left-facing draped bust effigy of George Washington, based on the classic portrait design by John Flanagan, occupies the central field. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, while QUARTER DOLLAR curves along the lower border. The inscription LIBERTY appears to the left of the portrait, and IN GOD WE TRUST is positioned in two lines to the right of the bust. The engraver's initials JF appear beneath the truncation of Washington's neck.
