Reverse description Central allegorical scene depicting General George Washington standing at the bow of a Durham boat, commanding his troops during the celebrated overnight crossing of the ice-choked Delaware River on December 25–26, 1776, prior to the Battle of Trenton during the American Revolutionary War. Soldiers are shown manning oars and poles amid drifting ice floes, conveying the peril and determination of the historic maneuver. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper rim, with E PLURIBUS UNUM below it. The inscriptions CROSSING THE DELAWARE and QUARTER DOLLAR appear in the lower field and exergue, respectively. The design, engraved by Michael Gaudioso, is part of the America the Beautiful Quarters program.
