The Blue Ridge Parkway quarter was issued as part of the America the Beautiful series, which Congress authorized in 2008 to run through 2021 — five designs per year, one for each national park or federal site. North Carolina's slot in 2015 honored the Parkway jointly with Virginia, since the 469-mile scenic road crosses both states; the decision to credit North Carolina alone on the coin reflected which state held administrative primacy for the site within the National Park Service's designation framework.
The .900 silver proof version was struck exclusively at San Francisco.
